On this two-week tour, mountains, Mozart, and mugs of beer all clink together to create a totally yodel-y adventure. Starting in Cologne, along Germany's mighty Rhine River, your Rick Steves guide will make this region's history and culture come alive in royal Munich, fairy-tale Neuschwanstein, Baroque Salzburg, stately Vienna, relaxing Baden-Baden, the cut-glass Alps of the Swiss Berner Oberland, and beautiful Lake Hallstatt — with plenty of breathtaking scenery along the way. Join us for the Best of Germany, Austria & Switzerland in 14 Days!
Day 1: Welcome to Germany
We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel in Cologne for a "Welcome to Germany" meeting. Then we'll take an evening walk through the city's lively, compact core and get acquainted over dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Cologne.
Day 2: Historic Cologne
We'll begin our day with a walking tour of Cologne, tracing the city's Roman origins and cultural rise to Germany's religious center in the Middle Ages. Together, we'll marvel at the scale of Northern Europe's most massive Gothic church, Cologne Cathedral, and appreciate how it survived the city bombings during WWII. The afternoon is yours to discover more of Cologne's history, including its famous Eau de Cologne, at one of its charming museums.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Cologne.
Day 3: Burg Eltz Castle and Baden Baden
This morning's drive takes us to the Mosel River and the mighty Burg Eltz — Europe's oldest castle still in use as a residence — where we'll tour the complex and experience firsthand how lords and ladies lived 500 years ago. Before leaving the valley behind, we'll stop in the über-quaint village of Beilstein for lunch together along the riverbank. Our final destination is the old resort town of Baden-Baden, famous for its mineral baths and games of chance. Upon arrival, we'll take an orientation stroll through town. Then you'll have the rest of the evening free to "do the spa" (with or without your swimsuit), wander along the shaded riverside promenade, or try your luck in the ornate casino.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 ½ hours. Sleep in Baden-Baden.
Day 4: Black Forest and Beyond
We'll start our day with a scenic drive to a nearby luge course for a ride on a tiny sled with wheels (weather permitting) before our arrival at the Black Forest Open-Air Museum. Here we'll have a local guide walk us through the preserved farmhouses and mills, leaving some free time to linger in the past and order up some lunch (prepare for the wurst!). Then we'll drive up into Switzerland's snow-peaked Berner Oberland country. At the end of the deep Lauterbrunnen Valley, we'll take a thrilling gondola lift up to our hotel in clifftop Mürren, where we'll enjoy amazing views and have dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Mürren.
Day 5: TheSchilthornandHiking in the Swiss Alps
Let's begin the day with a thrilling ride up the gondola lift to the top of the Schilthorn at 10,000 feet. The rest of the day is all yours to loiter in the thin air or find your way back down to Mürren. You may want to join your guide for an optional mountain walk…or take a narrow-gauge railway up the other side of the valley to Kleine Scheidegg, near the majestic Eiger and Jungfrau peaks.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Mürren.
Day 6: More of the Berner Oberland
This morning we'll witness the roaring, thundering, crashing, splashing display of nature's awesome power in Trümmelbach Falls — a series of subterranean waterfalls that plunge hundreds of feet into darkness behind the valley's cliffs. You'll have the afternoon free to take a brisk mountain walk or explore more of the Berner Oberland on your own before we regroup for dinner.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: ½ hour. Sleep in Mürren.
Day 7: Scenic Drive into Bavaria
Today's drive is a good time to catch up on your trip journal, listen to music, curl up with a good book, or just sit back and enjoy views of pristine mountains and sparkling lakes. We'll stop for lunch on our way to the heart of Bavaria — home of fairy-tale castles, well-worn lederhosen, sing-along beer gardens, and oompah-hospitality. Tonight, we'll enjoy dinner together in Munich.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 7 hours. Sleep in Munich.
Day 8: All Day to Explore Munich
We'll spend our morning getting a behind-the-scenes look at Munich with a walking tour through its historic Old Town, learning about the "checkered" history and traditions of Bavaria. The rest of the day is yours to stroll around Germany's most livable city, soak up some culture at its world-class museums, or rent a bike to pedal the car-free paths of the English Garden and Isar River.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Munich.
Day 9: Neuschwanstein and Salzburg
This morning we'll drive through farming country, then take an uphill hike to tour the fairy-tale fantasy of "Mad" King Ludwig: Neuschwanstein Castle (when available). We'll hike back down to share lunch together before leaving Germany behind. Later this afternoon we'll arrive in Salzburg and settle into our quaint hotel. We'll end our day with an orientation walk through the historic center, and share a "Welcome to Austria" dinner together.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Salzburg.
Day 10: All Day to Soak Up Salzburg
Salzburg is a perfect town for a walking tour, and that's how we'll spend our morning: strolling under the wrought-iron signs of the Getreidegasse, going Baroque at the Salzburg Cathedral, and exploring the Mirabell Gardens. The rest of your day is free for wandering through Salzburg's magnificent gardens, hiking up the fortress hill for a panoramic view, or pedaling a rented bike into the countryside, singing "do, re, mi." Your guide will give you a run-down of local concerts you could enjoy this evening.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Salzburg.
Day 11: Austria's Lovely Lake District
This morning we'll make our way to postcard-pretty Lake Hallstatt. It's far too cute for our bus, so after settling in to our lakeside lodging we'll enjoy a boat cruise past breathtaking villages and craggy mountain vistas. Spend a free afternoon communing with Mother Nature on foot or by boat — or hike up to one of the world's oldest salt mines before tonight's dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Boat: 1 hour. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep on Lake Hallstatt.
Day 12: Lessons of History
Today we'll drive toward Vienna, stopping en route to visit the thought-provoking Mauthausen concentration camp memorial, where we'll learn about the Holocaust and lessons of 1933–1945. Then we'll follow the Danube Valley to the grand finale of our tour — Vienna, once the capital of Europe's wealthiest empire. We'll cap off our day with an evening walking tour through historic Vienna before setting you free for dinner on your own.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Vienna.
Day 13: All Day in Classy Vienna
We'll begin our day in sophisticated Vienna with a trip to the Third Man Museum for a fascinating look at the city's post-WWII history. Then we'll explore the city's rich Habsburg heritage, including its elegant Opera House (when available). Your afternoon is free to explore another world-class museum or two, or to slow down and enjoy sipping a coffee in the city where Europe's café scene was born. Tonight we'll meet for our last dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Prost!
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Vienna.
Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Vienna's airport by train, bus or taxi. You'll have easy connections to home, or on to other points in Europe. Auf Wiedersehen!

Our trip was extremely enjoyable with fantastic exposures to the scenery of Switzerland, southern Germany, and Austria. I felt the balance between guided tours and free time to explore museums and hike on our own was perfect. Our guide, Andrea Wolf, was very knowledgeable, very pleasant, and very considerate of all of the guests under her care.

What kept me from giving tour an outstanding rating had to do with short time in Baden Baden, arrived early evening, would have liked an afternoon and evening there. Also the visit to the Third Man Museum in Vienna was way too long and the local guide there was very eccentric to say the least.

We were very excited to be able to take the tour, after having our scheduled trip cancelled in 2020 due to Covid. All my expectations were met and even exceeded in many instances. The GAS tour was an interesting mix of castles, beautiful mountains, interesting history and great food. Our guide, Andrea, was cheerful, organized, interesting/informative and did her best to adapt to covid protocols. This was our 5th Rick Steves Tour and as with the others it was well run. If I were asked for improvements, I would have liked more time in Baden-Baden. Although I know we were warned about it the bus ride to Munich seemed long.

We waited three long years for a green light to keep on traveling with Rick Steves! We were excited about this itinerary. It was so fun to meet our guide, Tara, and our tour group members. This was our first Rick Steves tour and we loved it. I was a little hesitant as I usually do not enjoy group tours. We have used the RS guidebooks and really enjoy the travel philosophy. We were considering this tour because it was supposed to be active. Then my brother and his wife took a RS tour to Italy last year and loved it so much they signed up for the Germany tour this year. That convinced me. We were not disappointed.

This was our first RS tour but won't be our last. We've traveled many times on our own and decided to take the tour to eliminate all the upfront planning work. The tour certainly delivered on that plus so much more. We wouldn't have been able to cover so much ground or have such rich cultural experiences on our own.

"Views from the top of the Schilthorn were breathtaking & Murren was my favorite destination. Close second was in Salzburg at the apple strudel interactive demonstration. Traditional spa in Baden-Baden was also a highlight."

Each hotel we stayed at was in a central location of the old part of the city.

"There were so many, but perhaps the gondola lift up to the Schilthorn early on a Saturday morning. We were the first group up to the top. It was quiet, peaceful, and clear. The view was like none we'd ever seen before. It actually brought tears to our eyes to view such beauty."

This tour of Germany/Austria/ Switzerland far and away exceeded our expectations! Along with our group of enthusiastic travelers, we joined our exceptional guide, Andrea on a tour that encompassed gorgeous scenery, historical places, great food and art. From the peaceful green valleys scattered with bell-laden cattle to the high snow-covered peaks of the Swiss Alps to the musical center of Saltsburg and then Munich where the events of Nazi Germany were brought to our attention, we felt blessed.

"The ride up the gondola to the Schilthorn and the stunning views all around on a freezing, sunny morning had to be among many wow moments. Our boat ride at Lake Hallstatt held more beautiful scenery. Another very worthwhile tour, was the visit to the Third Man Museum in Vienna. This passionate collector has put together an amazing museum with first-hand accounts from people he has interviewed."

You have exceeded our expectations. We so enjoyed this tour and all the hotels and meals. Our tour guide was exceptional and so knowledgeable. The hotels were perfect we wanted the feel of the region and a good location and they were both. The apple strudel cooking class in Salzburg was such a treat. "Switzerland! The village of Murren was such a beautiful place to stay. We loved the hikes on the valley floor and the Mountain View Trail from Allmendhubel to Gimmelwald (though the last little bit was pretty tough). The sights of the Alps all along these trails was "wow!" We took the gondola up to Schilthorn and back down to Birg. It was all so very beautiful!Have to add the Apple Strudel cooking class - the Sound of Music sights - and Mauthausen as other high points of this trip."

This was our 2nd Rick Steves tour and, once again, it did not disappoint. We enjoyed all of the destinations, our tour guide Andrea enhanced the experience with her knowledge of the local culture and history and our bus driver was personable and friendly and did a great job. Our group was wonderful; made so many new friends. The hotels were fine; the quality of the meals was variable - form mediocre to superb.

"The Murren, Switzerland area was spectacular. The views from the top of Mt. Schilthorn on a clear day were amazing. Attended a Mozart opera/dinner in Salzburg. Jaw-dropping experience - being serenaded with "O Solo Mio" by an aspiring opera tenor (who I was sitting across from at a Mozart opera/dinner in Salzburg) in the washroom between acts. The star baritone heard and walked in and couldn't believe his eyes or ears. Later he invited the young tenor onstage to sing - got a standing O."

My first tour was a 10, second tour 7.5, this tour 5. There were things that we had to pay for that I felt should have been included. The tour guide said we can take our time but then it was rush rush rush. There were 3 people who fell on this trip. He was checked out and not very engaged with us as a group. Didn't speak loud enough and then would mumble. It so happened that a couple both fell at different times, Hans commented that it must run in the family when the second one tripped and fell.

I loved the tour overall but couldn't help but feel that reality is being ignored in the designing of some aspects of our experience. Some hotels didn't have room for Rick's idea of a "small group" in the lobby or breakfast areas, and tours in places like the Black Forest Open Air Museum and the rooms of the Vienna Treasury were crowded enough (with us) that it was difficult to see and I felt bad for other visitors we crowded out. Baden Baden was 'eh' and Halsatt is no longer nice to visit.

The tour was everything we had hoped for, and more. Our tour leader Maisey was outstanding - supremely knowledgeable of the history and culture of our tour area, wonderfully personable and witty, and she did a great job of keeping us on schedule. Oktoberfest was overcrowded as expected.

My mother, sister and I were looking for an experience to get a closer look at Germany, Austria and Switzerland. I felt like this was a wonderful tour to get to see some new destinations and to get a feeling for the culture of these three nations, even if it felt rushed at times. You walk along this wooded path for a good few minutes, then before you is this huge castle that seems to take up the whole valley. The second was our days in Murren. Whether drinking a beer at Hofbräuhaus in München or Stegl in Salzburg or listening to the cow bells ringing in the distance from Mürren or doing a spa in Baden-Baden or climbing through the salt mines of Hallstatt... one has to appreciate the tradition of these places. Absolutely fabulous trip. This was our first Rick Steve's tour and we couldn't have been more pleased. I'm sure we got the "BEST" tour guide. Daniela Wedel was such an informative and outstanding person to spend two weeks with on tour. Thank you Daniela! Our city guides were excellent also!

"Taking the tram up to the Schilthorn - Piz Gloria. Daniela made arrangements for whomever on the tour wanted to do this and it was a brilliant way to introduce us to the WOW of the Swiss Alps. The views were incredible and there was no way to take a bad photo!Another powerful moment was visiting Mauthausen concentration camp - so moving and essential to helping me understand the history and the people of the area during World War II."

WOW! Our high expectations for this tour were met and or exceeded. Daniela our Tour Director, was well organized. Keeping our itinerary and our free time running smoothly, to get the best out of our trip. Her enthusiasm and sharing her own experiences gave us a better understanding of the history of the country and culture of the German people. All the sweet treats kept a smile on everyone's face, too. It was fun and interesting hearing the stories from our group at dinner. Great experience!

I appreciated the balance between group activities and free time. We visited both larger cities and smaller towns, viewed beautiful countryside and historic architecture. We hiked in the mountains and rode the underground trains in Vienna. We listened to an alpen horn and a Mozart concert. Each hotel had its own flavor and the hosts were gracious. The tour guide and bus driver shepherded the group with patience and humor. The gorgeous weather enhanced the whole experience.

"I learned so much history and culture of the places we visited. The local guides and our tour guide imparted the information with passion and humor. I have better understanding of the political and cultural climate and events which shaped the present day countries we visited. Great sights; comfortable bus with like-minded travelers;lot's of room since the tour was only 24 people; perfect weather nearly all the time but could have used more AC at night in several hotels. Mathias Unger, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable, fun, entertaining and very accommodating.....even got us Kaiserschmarrn before the trip ended...could not have asked for a better guide quite frankly. Seems like maybe we could have gone inside a few more buildings as part of the tour perhaps.

We had a superlative tour! Everything about this tour clicked, the group was comprised of 6 singles and the remainder couple, all dedicated travelers. Not only were we a great mix, but a medical emergency occurred while we were in Murren and that seemed to unite and solidify the group in a very special way. There were several who were past alumni, but most of us were first timers. The stops are perfect, the food amazing and the hotels peaceful.

"Our WOW moment was 3 days of crystal blue sky, craggy snow capped peaks and vivd green valleys. Laterbrunnen and the mountains surrounding it are beyond description adjectives, and everywhere you turned was a new vista or something you had to point out or capture with your camera. The tiny town of Murren was full of charm, a young girl serenaded us with a song, the window boxes were filled with flowers and the alp horns echoed in the evening air. It is like being somewhere otherworldly."

The tour was a great experience. After traveling to Europe independently on a couple of trips, I wasn't sure how I would feel about a tour. I liked the destinations included in the GAS tour and could see that some of those could be tricky to get to on our own if we didn't want to rent a car, so we signed up. "This is a very hard question to answer. All the countries on the tour (plus our extra days before and after) were new to me. In a way this trip was designed to be a "wow" trip throughout. Getting off the gondola and seeing the view in Murren was certainly a moment I won't forget. The feeling of enjoying Munich more than I thought I would was wonderful. Seeing the postcard picture spot in Hallstatt was amazing and something I looked forward to from the very beginning. And then there was Salzburg!"

I had a great experience this was my 9th trip so by now I appreciate the effort that goes into organizing and leading these tours. We has a great group and a great leader.I was on the best of Germany tour last year so that their was a couple of places like neuschwanstein that that we visited ,so Rolinka got me a ticket for the family castle instead .overall great experience!

This tour was far more than I expected w/ the level of detail, beautiful sites, excellent local tour guides & fabulous local entertainers on our last nights. Rolinka is such a good leader & kept everyone on time & brought out the best in the sites. I am a single woman joining mostly couples but never felt out of place. I am so thrilled to have been in these beautiful countries w/ friendly, courteous locals & to have finally visited my maternal ancestors' countries, Austria and Germany.

Our overall experience was better than we expected. We have used RS books for years and booked lots of hotels, local guides and eaten in restaurants that RS recommends. We wanted to try a RS tour and it exceeded our expectations. We liked the pace of the tour, the fact that all tour guests were able to move at a quick pace, and everyone on the trip was an active traveler and did not fuss or complain. Hans and our driver Richard were both outstanding. They made the trip!

This is my second RS Tour, so I pretty much knew what to expect. The trip was laid out pretty much. Overall, I had a good time. A bit of a warm time. The ban on food & drink was a serious flaw...reduced our group's ability to interact on the bus and eliminated an aspect of tours I have always greatly enjoyed.

We had a fantastic time. Every part of the tour was organized and we had no mishaps. Hans our tour guide has a great sense of humor and made our trip very enjoyable. He worked hard to be sure everyone was well taken care of and all our needs were being met. What my Wife and I like about Rick Steve's Tours is all we have to do is show up everything is planned and taken care of for you. We get a good history lesson along the way and see many things we may miss if we planned on our own.

Our tour exceeded our expectations. We had been to the UK twice before, using Rick Steves books to plan our trips, but we had never taken a formal travel tour. We'd had great experiences on our own, so were a little nervous that we would find the tour experience less enjoyable than traveling alone. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our Germany, Austria, & Switzerland tour was better than anything we could have imagined.

It was a bit frustrating getting from Frankfurt to Trier because we had not been there before, didn't really know what to expect & didn't speak German. After the tour began it went smoothly. We loved seeing the countryside and walking through the various towns. Ere was enough free time that we didn't feel constrained to a rigorous schedule. This tour was amazing because of our tour guide's expertise; the planned schedule and the most comfortable mode of travel in a new bus with Will at the wheel. Although grueling at times, every stop along this journey had something to offer with the architecture, history and food. The lay of the land was beautiful, so green and lush there was never a dull moment; only to take in what nature had to offer. The weather was also very cooperative. I was held captive in each location of this tour.

My tour experience was very nice. The hotels were very clean and all offered a wonderful breakfast. While at times it felt a little hectic. There where days when we needed to be on the bus at 7:45. That being said the overall experience was very good.

It was fun. The tour people were great and the sights and places were amazing. I liked seeing the little shops and eateries. I'm glad I studied the RS guide book before the trip and added the interesting locations onto my GPS because your free time passes quickly and you can miss a lot if you don't know where things are. I also stored the locations of patisseries in the cities we visited. You can't see or taste pastries like this where I live in Valencia, CA.

Being a part of a tour group is a crap shoot, yet we feel that we won the lottery with this group, and Iris had a lot to do with that. The GAS tour was a perfect tour for our 1st Rick Steves tour. I loved the itinerary, especially the Alps. Hans was less than personable and by the end of the trip was still confused about group member's names. He often called us by incorrect names. Questions about the region were frequently answered with, "Ah, I'll get to that." But were often unanswered. He said at the beginning he was laid back, he seemed to have checked out and it made since when he said this was his last year doing tours.

The high heat had a definite effect on my enjoyment of the tour. As someone who loves photography, it would be helpful to have a guide of our walks. Later, when I look at my photos it's hard to remember what was what. All the guides were excellent. My second tour and again a nice group of people.

This was our 8th Rick Steves tour and we're already starting to think about which one will be number 9. Our tour guide deserves much of the credit for making it an outstanding tour. Andrea was especially good at providing us with the historical background necessary to understand present-day Germany and her native Austria. She used the time on the bus wisely to provide that and other information about our destinations and to answer our questions.

This part of Europe is especially rich in 20th and 21st century history, as well as gorgeousscenery and wonderful food. It was a delight. The guide was terrific in giving us a good history lesson as we went along. She also provided useful and interesting informationabout present day situations. Our bus driver was also extremely nice and a very safedriver and very helpful.

To some it up: Fun, educational, active, sand exhausting. The straight forward heads up from the organization that this would be rather physical and demanding was right on.Our guide (Andrea Wolf) covered all the details so well that that we came away with a great deal of satisfaction and appreciation!

I really enjoyed the tour! Andrea was an outstanding guide, as were all the local guides. I appreciated her being so open to answering questions about different topics. The only downside for me was the very hot weather with no air conditioning in most hotels. It would be to have a fan available, sleeping was difficult. I realize the weather was beyond your control. I think 2 nights in Lake Hanchett would have been great. It is a beautiful peaceful place but not enough time to relax and enjoy it.

This is our 3rd Rick Steves tour & we're looking into what our 4th will be. The tours never disappoint, we enjoy the organized, authentic behind the scenes glimpse of the locale. We decided on the tour fairly late & love the fact that Rick Steves makes it so easy to travel. Is Berlin or Munich better? ›Berlin vs Munich – the final verdict

How many days do I need to see Switzerland? ›Small enough to traverse end-to-end in a few hours and with excellent public transport, Switzerland can be explored in as little as three days, specifically if you stick to one or two key regions. A five to seven-day trip will let you see a broader mix of city and countryside attractions.
What is the best time to visit Germany? ›In Germany, the "tourist season" runs roughly from May through September. Summer has its advantages: the best weather, snow-free alpine trails, very long days (light until after 21:00), and the busiest schedule of tourist fun. Travel during "shoulder season" (spring and fall) is easier and can be a bit less expensive.
Which is nicer Switzerland or Austria? ›Austria has the advantage of being a less ludicrously expensive destination, while Switzerland is culturally more diverse. Austria's architecture and cities are arguably more impressive once one is out of the mountains but Switzerland has taller mountains (although neither have the tallest).
Is Austria more beautiful than Switzerland? ›Not only are Austrian cities frequently more charming than their Swiss counterparts, they are also often more vibrant and energetic.
